Nigerians win African battle
Sportal

Nigerian champion Enyimba has won the African Champions League against Egypt's Ismaili, but the second leg in Cairo was marred by violence on and off the field.

Despite a 1-0 loss, Enyimba did enough in the first leg to record a 2-1 aggregate win and become the first Nigerian side to win the continent’s top club prize.

There was no love lost between the players with a number of incidents during the game sparking the home crowd.

The trouble began following a disputed 27th minute penalty scored by Hosni Abd Rabbou and culminated on the pitch with the referee halting play for six minutes after an all-in-brawl.

A reporter covering the game was one of the people injured during the violence that erupted after the final whistle.

The riot forced the post-match ceremony to be delayed by half an hour while an official of host side Ismaili bizarrely attempted to hide the winner's trophy.
